▶️ JEAN VICQUEMARE - "My point is, you need to see a *psychiatrist* about this shit. Not a psychologist -- several degrees harder. Is there's something harder than a psychiatrist?" He pauses to think. "A forensic psychiatrist. Go talk to that."

Jean-Heron Vicquemare,[2] also known as The Man with Sunglasses, is a character from Disco Elysium.

Background

Career in the RCM

Jean Vicquemare is a satellite-officer serving in the Revachol Citizens Militia at Precinct 41. He's Harry Du Bois's satellite-officer, meaning that while Jean wasn't promoted to lieutenancy himself, he was elevated to a similar hierarchical status as Harry's partner. Both officers worked to turn the C-Wing into a "task force", much to Jean's displeasure.[3] Jean's involvement in the Major Crimes Unit as Harry's partner doesn't have a defined timeline, though Empathy suggests it was two years at minimum.[4] Jean remarks that Dora was "way before" his time,[5] implying their partnership is less than 6 years old. Jean was an equestrian cop before conceding to use a Coupris, at Harry's insistence.[6]

Mental Health

Jean Vicquemare has clinical depression. When asked about his depression by Harry, he tends to be very sarcastic when revealing that he's been diagnosed for at least seven years, stating that his doctors consider it a medical anomaly.[7] In an interview with The41stPrecinct's Human Can Opener podcast, Argo Tuulik had made note that Jean has not committed suicide due to the fact that he is "fascinated" by the extent of his depression.[8]

Story Involvement

He is absent at the beginning of the game, having been told to "fuck off" by Harry prior to the events of the game. During an Esprit de Corps check, he can be heard asking for Harry's whereabouts to then realize that Harry is still in Martinaise.[9]

Prior to Day 3, Jean Vicquemare can only be heard through the radio inside Kim Kitsuragi's Coupris Kineema when making a call to Precinct 41. He expresses immense frustration when it's first reported that Harry has lost his gun and badge.[10] In an Esprit De Corps check, he can be heard reprimanding the other officers for laughing during Harry's station call, then revealing Harry had previously told Jean about his intent to "get worse." After telling Jules Pidieu not to report the call to higher authority, he then states the call should be treated a prank.[11]

After the 3rd day, Jean can be found inside the Whirling-In-Rags accompanied by Judit Minot. While he is in the Whirling-In-Rags, he is disguised to the player as The Man with Sunglasses. He later clarifies that this disguise was intended as a joke to boost Harry's spirits, aiming to mimic Guillaume Bevy, a police reporter who had briefly worked with Precinct 41 in the Major Crimes Unit.[12]

Spoiler warning

This section contains spoilers. View at your own discretion.

After confronting Ruby, the Instigator, a passive Esprit de Corps check shows Jean and Judit both speaking to each other in the cafeteria hostel about whether to stay or leave. Judit will make the decision for both of them to leave, and the two officers will no longer be found in the Whirling-in-Rags for the remainder of the game.[13] This, coincidentally, occurs right before the tribunal, meaning Jean and the remainder of Major Crimes Unit is not present to witness the tribunal and its outcome.

Jean Vicquemare reappears for the last time when the player comes back to the fishing village during The Return. Upon entering, the game automatically initiates the end-game debriefing with Jean, accompanied by his associates, Judit and Trant Heidelstam. During the entirety of the posse meeting, Jean will act impatient and frustrated to most every response Harry can give, but will briefly soften up when shown a photo of The Insulindian Phasmid.[14]

Jean will act as the final decision maker as to whether or not Harry will be given clearance to work again. He will accept both Kim or Cuno if Harry chooses to recruit either of them. The final Esprit De Corps check shows Ptolemy Pryce approving Vicquemare to be part of whatever he is planning with Nix Gottlieb in the coming spring.[15]

Spoilers end here

The rest of this article will not have any story spoilers.

Appearance

Jean is described as having grey eyes.[16] He has black hair and a beard, and dresses in an RCM lieutenant's uniform. Ruby will mention that Jean has a "brooding" demeanor about him, and that he appears to have a well-developed physique.[17] His character model in-game is also taller than those of Harry and Kim. Martin Luiga stated on Twitter that the pockmarks seen on Jean Vicquemare's in-game portrait are scars from pox, resembling those of the Estonian poet Mait Vaik.[18] Likewise, Jean Vicquemare's appearance is also inspired by Paul Banks of Interpol.

When disguised as Guillaume Bevy, Jean wears a blond wig and sunglasses. He jokes that it's a "hobby of his."[19]

Trivia

  • Jean Vicquemare's voice was changed for the release of The Final Cut, now being voiced by David Mayrat in place of Dot Major. His voice was re-recorded for the October 2021 update of The Final Cut, still voiced by Mayrat. The new voice, present in all recent versions of the game, is a lower pitch with a more "husky" bravado, and has a flatter tone.
    • The "original" Final Cut voice can still be heard when making the station call, and when disguised as Man with Sunglasses, though some Man with Sunglasses lines were also re-recorded in the new voice.
    • Dot Major's version of the voice is completely inaccessible unless playing on a version of Disco Elysium released prior to The Final Cut.
  • Aside from the wig and the sunglasses, there are noticeable minor differences between his disguised portrait and his non-disguised portrait.
  • At some point before the events of the game he "yoinked off" a bottle of mustard from a homeless person in front of a Frittte.[20]
    • According to Martin Luiga, this bottle of mustard may have been confiscated due to its owners utilizing it for unsavory (and illegal) acts.[21]
  • Jean is a communist.[22]

Audio Quote
"Ha-ha-ha, ho-ho-ho." He grabs his stomach in mirthless laughter. "Tequila Sunset -- not Sunrise, because you're almost dead. So funny, Harry. Thank you for fucking me."
"I *know* who Jacob Irw is. I wanted to give you a chance to stop *fucking* me. How naive of me. You drove a 45,000 reál police vehicle into the ocean -- what did I expect?"
"That's great! *Entroponaut* is a great new career for you -- *after* police officer. I don't care. Go live in the pale."

Audio Quote
"Yes, we can see the jacket. 'Hey everybody -- I'm working undercover in a *hard fetish gang*. I don't care about anyone or anything.' We've been through this."
"You fucking idiot. You stupid fucking idiot. You're even worse than before. How is that even *possible*?"
"See -- there!" He wags his finger at you. "He's getting it! I was *impersonating* him. Look at me, I'm G-Bevy. It was going to be funny. But then you really did have brain damage -- so not so much anymore."

Audio Quote
"I'm your goddamn *partner* Jean Vicquemare, and this is *your* special task force," he says, gesturing toward his companions. "Or what's left of it."
"What does that say on your back? 'Fuck the World'? So you've turned into some kind of... nihilistic rock-and-roll *world ender*?"
"You look like a fucking clown, Harry. *Not* like a funny police officer, but like a real-life, full-time, pie-in-the-face, unicycle-riding circus employee."

JEAN VICQUEMARE - "This shit does *not* leave this room! Not a word of this to the captain or anyone else. We'll give him a couple of days to pull his shit together!"
JULES PIDEAU - "I guess I can hold off the report for a few days." Oldboy lights another cigarette.

JEAN VICQUEMARE - "Yes. It really does make it hard to fire the drunk..." His tired eyes follow the photo as the lieutenant puts it away.
